Pla de l'Estany is a comarca (county) in Catalonia, Spain. Its name means "plain of the lake", the lake in question being the Lake of Banyoles. Banyoles is also the name of the capital of the comarca and home to over half of its people. Pla de l'Estany was established as a separate comarca in 1988 on the basis of a referendum; prior to that it had constituted the northwest part of the comarca of Gironès. The comarca borders the comarques of Garrotxa, Alt Empordà, and Gironès.
Pla de l'Estany is largely agricultural, but has also long had industries in textiles, furniture, leather, iron, and copper.

In the high mountains, on the southern slopes of the Pyrenees, near the French border. Pallars Sobirà is in the valley of the Noguera Pallaresa, the river which forms its north-south axis; the valleys of its upper reaches are flanked by towering peaks — Colomers (2,930 m), Saboredo (2,830 m), Mont-roig (2,846 m), Pic de Sotllo (3,073 m) or Pica d'Estats (3,143 m), the highest mountain in Catalonia— and dotted with lakes. The valleys of the upper reaches form three well-differentiated subdivisions of the territory: the Vall d’Àneu, through which the Noguera Pallaresa flows, with the centre at Esterri d'Àneu; the Vall de Cardós, drained by the Noguera de Cardós, with the centre at Ribera de Cardós; and the Vall Ferrera, drained by the Noguera Vallferrera, with the centre at Alins de Vallferrera. The southern sector revolves around Sort, the capital. It also includes the eastern sector of the Aigüestortes National Park with Sant Maurici lake, dominated by the unmistakable silhouette of Els Encantats. In the Middle Ages, Pallars Sobirà was part of the Pyrenean county of Pallars, which, in the 11th century, was divided into Pallars Sobirà and Pallars Jussà, a separation which has been maintained in the modern territorial division. Agriculture and exploitation of the woodland were complemented by exploitation of the iron mines of the Vall Ferrera (forges) and the salt deposits of Gerri. In modern times the hydroelectric industries have become firmly established. In recent decades, tourists have arrived, attracted by the beauty of the landscape, the walking and climbing, or the winter and adventure sports.
