In the hinterland, in the eastern sector of the central Catalan depression, on the plain watered by the Urgell canal, created in 1987 from a series of separate municipalities in Noguera, Urgell and Les Garrigues, with the capital at Mollerussa. In the late Middle Ages, the territory was part of the great county of Urgell and of the county of Barcelona. The economy is based on agriculture and stock-breeding, complemented by industry (especially food), which is concentrated in Mollerussa. Tourism has not been introduced to any significant extent.
