Anoia is in the hinterland, at the far east end of the central Catalan depression, in the valley of the river Anoia (a tributary of the Llobregat). At the centre is the Òdena basin, surrounded by hills and plateaux: Montserrat (NE), Rubió sierra and Calaf plateaux (NW), Brufaganya, Queralt, Llacuna and Orpinell sierras (SW). In the Middle Ages, the territory was basically part of the counties of Manresa (and diocese of Vic), Barcelona (diocese of Barcelona), and the magistratures of Cervera and Vilafranca. Agricultural activities are now complemented by the leather, textile (knitwear) and paper industries. There is little tourist infrastructure, but Anoia receives a good number of visitors and the more rural towns and villages are becoming increasingly popular for second homes.
