Osona is a comarca situated in central Catalonia, Spain. Its capital is Vic. Its population (as of 2001[update]) is 129,543. Osona covers roughly the same area as the historic Catalan county of Osona. The name Osona comes from Ausetans, a group of Iberian people that had their capital in Ausa (today Vic); the Romans called the area Ausone or Ausona. While most of the comarca is within the province of Barcelona, the municipalities of Espinelves, Vidrà and Viladrau form part of the province of Girona.
Long famous for its sausages (especially fuet) and other pork derivatives, in recent years the area has become somewhat infamous for the pollution of its waterways due to the factory farming of pigs.

Osona is in the hinterland, in the north-east of the central Catalan depression; in the middle is the plain of Vic, through which the river Ter flows, surrounded by mountains and plateaux: the Montseny massif (SE), Guilleries (E), Collsacabra (NE), Vidranès (N) and Lluçanès (NW), which are all subdivisions of the comarca. Vic is the capital, and its market serves a remarkably wide area. Traditional farmhouses of great architectural beauty. In the Middle Ages, the territory was the county of Osona, which soon became part of the county of Barcelona. From the 9th century, Vic became the cathedral city of a large diocese. Agriculture, complemented by weaving and tanning, has given way over the last century to an ever-expanding industry (textile factories and estates on the banks of the Ter) which is still strong today (food, textiles, metal, wood, etc.). The tourist infrastructure is rather sparse, but visitors come to Osona attracted by the variety and charm of the landscape (walking, climbing) and the rich architectural heritage.
