Gironès is a comarca (county) in eastern Catalonia, Spain, bordering Selva, Baix Empordà, Alt Empordà, Pla de l'Estany and Garrotxa. As of 2008[update], more than half of the comarca's 175,148 inhabitants live in the capital, Girona, which is also the capital of the province of Girona.

Inland from the Costa Brava, built around the important city of Girona. A plain at the northern end of the pre-coastal depression, separated from the sea by the Gavarres massif and watered by the river Ter and its tributaries: the Onyar, the Galligants and the Llémena stream. In the north-west sector rise the hills of the Rocacorba range. Apart from Girona and the surrounding villages, which have virtually become residential suburbs of the city, the major towns are Cassà de la Selva, Sant Julià de Ramis, Sarrià de Ter, Salt, Llagostera. Local history is identified with the history of the city of Girona and its strategic location on the Via Augusta: Roman town, centre of a Mediaeval diocese and county, which was united with the county and diocese of Barcelona in the 9th century to form the basic nucleus around which Catalonia was structured. Agriculture and stock-breeding still flourish in the more isolated rural areas, as do some crafts (Quart ceramics, cork in Cassà de la Selva). Modern industries have developed around Girona. In the city itself tourism occupies a vital place, and in the inland areas we find rural tourism and many second homes.
